Finnish Baby Box to the first NEWBORN, congratulations Kosovo 10 – Urime Kosovë 10!

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Independence of Kosovo, Embassy of Finland donated a maternity package for the first baby born on February 17, 2018. At the premises of the University hospital in Pristina, Ambassador Pia Stjernvall met with the mother and the first baby born Renea on Kosovo’s 10th anniversary.

"We at the Embassy thought on what would be a gift for the Kosovo’s decade of independence and we decided on a Finnish maternity package which is donated to all children born in Finland. This package covers the basic children needs for clothing for the first year," she said.

Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Health, Granit Abdullahi and Director of Neonatology Clinic, Dr. Xhevdet Gojnovci and the Finnish Contingent of KFOR.

The Baby Box – officially known as the maternity package – is a great Finnish social innovation that has improved the health and well-being of Finnish mothers and infants since 1938. Baby box is a world-famous box full of necessary items for the first year of childrearing, provided free of charge from Finnish government to all Finnish babies.

Finland is the home of baby box. The history dates back to 1930’s when the first versions of it were introduced. In the beginning the baby box was a means to support especially poor families and ensure that mothers were included in the national healthcare system.

All Finnish families are entitled to a free baby box that contains approximately 50 childrearing items, such as clothes, hygiene products and sleeping items. The box itself is designed to be used as a safe baby bed.
